press RollingStone.com "The kid with his guitar so drunk and anxious has been done to death," sings Kevin Devine on "Ballgame," the opening track of his second solo album. But that doesn't stop him from turning out a load of lovely melodies, folky guitar strums and quivering vocals. Make the Clocks Move contains the kind of everyday epiphanies you wish you'd thought to write down on your morning commute; the songs weave together the humdrum realities of life in your twenties -- shitty job, relationships gone awry, self-doubt. "Noose Dressed Like a Necklace" begins by contemplating post-9/11 xenophobia, then turns into a rant against the nine-to-five life. But with songs this good, Devine won't be joining us working stiffs anytime soon. (3 out of 5 stars) Lauren Gitlin(RS 938/939, December 25, 2003) |
